The greatest change will come when every member of the sporting community - athletes, event directors, sponsors, volunteers, spectators, media - becomes involved in the process toward sustainability. How can you be part of a fundamental shift toward responsible event production? Here are some suggestions.

Athletes

  • Attend responsibly-produced events as a participant or volunteer.
  • Participate in events closer to home, and use mass transit, a bike, or carpools to reach them.
  • Donate time or money to the Council for Responsible Sport.
  • If given the choice, opt-out of items (t-shirts, finisher medals, etc) that you don't want or need.
  • Sign the athlete petition.
  • Bring your own water bottle and reuse it.
  • Avoid printing maps, directions, instructions, or entry forms, if possible.

Event directors

  • Produce your event responsibly and certify it.
  • Sign the event director petition.
  • Allow participants to opt-out of non-essential race items.
  • Share your equipment (or borrow from others).
  • Help organize carpools to the event.
  • Create a looped course: start and finish at the same place.
  • Allow packet pick-up on the same day, and at the same place, as the race itself.
  • Make all planning decisions with environmental impact in mind.

Sponsors

  • Support local and/or ReSport certified events.
  • If providing product, allow the event to return unused items.
  • Develop marketing strategies that avoid excessive printing.
  • Promote the event's sustainability initiatives.
  • Use bulk, recyclable packaging.
